The experience of feeling like an individual is no longer part of their previous group, but not quite a member of the new group is known as liminality. My independent research includes developing a strengths-based theory of parental transformation to support parents of children with developmental disabilities. The purpose of theory development in complexity-informed research is to bring multiple aspects of an issue together to describe tensions and interconnected parts. The purpose of theory development in traditional research is to simplify and break problems down into parts. Traditional cause-and-effect or linear approaches to research seek to find solutions to well-defined problems, but complex problems are often ill-defined. Addressing incalcitrant problems is challenging because traditional research paradigms aren’t a good fit to explore and understand complex problems.
